Control of Epidemics by Quarantine and Isolation Strategies in Highly Mobile Populations

چکیده
In the absence of valid medicines or vaccine, quarantine and isolation strategies are the most important and effective measures against the outbreaks of epidemic diseases such as SARS. This paper discusses the application of the optimal quarantine and isolation strategies for SARS outbreak control via the Pontryagin’s Maximum Principle. We construct a multigroup SARS transmission model for traveling population and introduce pairs of control variables in terms of the quarantine and isolation strategies. A quadratic cost on the controls and a linear cost on the number of infected individuals are imposed. The simulation results illustrate how the disease spreads from region to region by means of travelers. And the results also demonstrate the importance of the early quarantine and isolation strategies and the necessity of the observation and quarantine of travelers to control the outbreaks of epidemics. This gives a theoretical interpretation to the practical experiences that the early quarantine and isolation strategies, as well as the observation and quarantine of travelers, are critically important to contain the epidemic.

Optimal quarantine and isolation strategies in epidemics control∗
In the absence of valid medicines or vaccine, quarantine and isolation strategies are the most important and effective measures against the SARS outbreaks. This paper discusses the application of the optimal and sub-optimal control for SARS outbreak control via the Pontryagin’s Maximum Principle and genetic algorithm, respectively. To this end, a pair of control variables representing the quara...

Computer vision syndrome (CVS) is a set of visual, ocular, and musculoskeletal symptoms that result from long-term computer use. These symptoms include eyestrain, dry eyes, burning, pain, redness, blurred vision, etc, which increase with the duration of computer use. Currently, with the closure of schools and universities due to the continued COVID19 pandemic many universities have taken the pr...
متن کاملPost-Pandemic Housing Architecture: Lessons from Covid19
Like other crises, the coronavirus epidemic has had a significant impact on our lives. As a result, the built environment has changed in order to adapt to new conditions and needs. Since Covid19 will not be the first and possibly the last epidemic, housing design must also adapt to the new reality. At present, the spatial properties of housing are influenced by strategies of social distance, qu...
متن کاملComparing nonpharmaceutical interventions for containing emerging epidemics.
Strategies for containing an emerging infectious disease outbreak must be nonpharmaceutical when drugs or vaccines for the pathogen do not yet exist or are unavailable. The success of these nonpharmaceutical strategies will depend on not only the effectiveness of isolation measures but also the epidemiological characteristics of the infection. However, there is currently no systematic framework...
متن کاملModelling strategies for controlling SARS outbreaks.
Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), a new, highly contagious, viral disease, emerged in China late in 2002 and quickly spread to 32 countries and regions causing in excess of 774 deaths and 8098 infections worldwide. In the absence of a rapid diagnostic test, therapy or vaccine, isolation of individuals diagnosed with SARS and quarantine of individuals feared exposed to SARS virus were us...
